Mariana, by Monica Dickens

Mariana was Monica Dickens' first novel, published in 1940. She was only 24 years old when she wrote it, an amazing feat considering the maturity of her style and shrewdness of her observations. It's an autobiographical / coming-of-age story, centering on the teenage Mary Shannon, who must negotiate the world of family, school, travel and romance. So much is happening in her life, it seems a flurry of activity, with family and friends pulling her in all directions. But the truth of the matter is Mary feels somewhat stuck, waiting for her life to take off. Her time studying acting turns out to be a total disaster, and several boyfriends are duds. A romantic young Frenchman promises much, but when all is said and done, Mary longs for the sturdy comforts of England, rather than the glitter of France.

This is my third Monica Dickens and I must say, I'm surprised she's not better known. She's such a delight to read, so funny and so sharp. Mariana, despite being some eighty years old, hasn't dated at all. It could have been written yesterday, except for the descriptions of people and place.

Another brilliant book from Persephone.
