I’ve never read any of Amanda Lohrey’s fiction, only her two quarterly essays and a piece she wrote about Greens Senator Christine Milne.
Vertigo is a new novella by Lohrey. To my surprise, and delight, I really, really enjoyed this short fiction.
Without giving too much away, it’s an evocative story about grief, played out against the background of a thirty-ish couple who have left their inner city digs and moved to the country.
Lohrey creates a wonderful suspense as events build to a dramatic climax, and one missing piece of the story is finally added.
I know, a story about a couple that moves to the country sounds cliched. Lohrey, however, handles her material with a beautiful poise. This is a finely written and crafted novel that will linger long after you have read it. I’ll certainly be looking to read some of Amanda Lohrey’s other novels.
